What is Avamys nasal spray?

Avamys nasal spray is a type of steroid medication used to treat hay fever (allergic rhinitis) symptoms. It also works to treat allergy symptoms caused by dust mites or pet dander.

Avamys nasal spray treats the following symptoms

A blocked or runny nose

Sneezing

Itching and discomfort

Red or watery eyes

Avamys can provide quick and effective relief from symptoms of allergic rhinitis, including:

  • a blocked or stuffy nose
  • sneezing
  • itching of the nose and eyes
  • red, watery eyes

How does Avamys nasal spray work?

Avamys contains the active ingredient fluticasone furoate, a type of steroid (or corticosteroid). It mimics the steroids that your body produces naturally.

It works by reducing your immune system’s response to an allergen, whether it’s pollen, pet dander or house dust mites. It does this by binding to the receptors of various immune cells in your nasal passage, stopping them from releasing histamine and triggering an allergic reaction.

In other words, Avamys prevents your body from triggering the immune response (to pollen or dust) that causes your uncomfortable hay fever symptoms. It relieves symptoms and reduces inflammation as well as nasal congestion.

How long does Avamys take to work?

Avamys typically starts to work within your first day of using it (around 8 - 24 hours) However, you may only start to feel the full effects and maximum benefits of the medication after a few days.

Who can use Avamys nasal spray?

Avamys is suitable for most adults who suffer from seasonal allergies. While it is suitable for some children, you should check with your doctor as the recommended dose will be different.

You should not take Avamys if you are allergic to fluticasone or any of the other ingredients listed in the patient information leaflet.

Your doctor may want to monitor your treatment closely if you:

  • have had glaucoma (increase in pressure in the eye)
  • have had cataracts (clouding of the lens of the eye)
  • have or have had any liver problems
  • are pregnant, breastfeeding or think you could be pregnant

If you have any pre-existing conditions, it’s best to consult your healthcare provider before using any new medications to ensure your safety.

How do I use Avamys nasal spray?

Avamys is available as a 27.5 microgram dose, meaning each spray contains 27.5 mcg of fluticasone. The typical dose is two sprays in each nostril once a day.

If you want to check how many sprays you have left, hold the nasal spray upright against a bright light and you will be able to see the level through the window on the bottle.

Below is a brief guide to preparing, using and cleaning your nasal spray. For a full guide with diagrams, please refer to the patient information leaflet.

Preparing the nasal spray

You must prepare the nasal spray before using it if:

  • this is your first time using it
  • you have left the cap off for 5 days
  • it has not been used for 30 days or more
  • it’s jammed (the pump doesn’t seem to be working)

To prepare the nasal spray before use, follow these instructions:

  1. With the cap still on, shake the nasal spray vigorously for 10 seconds.
  2. Remove the cap by squeezing both sides of it firmly with your thumb and forefinger.
  3. Hold the spray upright, then tilt and point the spray away from you.
  4. Press the button on the side of the bottle firmly. Do this at least 6 times until it releases a fine mist of spray into the air.
  5. Once you have seen this fine mist, the spray is ready for use.

If you find that your nasal spray isn’t working, don’t attempt to spray it into your nose. Check for damage, check the medicine levels or ask your pharmacist to check it if you are in any doubt.

Administering the nasal spray

To use Avamys nasal spray, complete the following steps:

  4. Press the spray button while gently inhaling through your nose.
  5. Breathe out through your mouth.
  6. Repeat the above steps with the other nostril before replacing the cap on the bottle.

Once you’re finished with your spray, replace the cap, pushing down until you hear it click into place.

What are the potential side effects?

As with all prescription medicines, you may experience some side effects, although not everyone gets them.

Some common side effects of Avamys include:

Common side effects
  • minor nosebleeds (more common in long-term treatment)
  • nasal ulceration, resulting in some nasal discomfort
  • headache
  • pain, burning, irritation or soreness in the nose

Allergic reactions to Avamys are quite rare but still possible. Stop taking Avamys and seek immediate medical attention if you experience:

  • sudden difficulty breathing
  • weakness, light-headedness or dizziness
  • swelling of the face
  • skin rashes

For a full list of side effects of Avamys, please refer to the patient information leaflet.

Does Avamys interact with other medicines?

Avamys should not be used in conjunction with any other steroid nasal sprays (e.g. Mometasone).

Other medicines that may interact with Avamys include:

  • any other type of steroid medicine (injections, tablets or creams)
  • asthma medicines
  • ritonavir - used to treat HIV
  • ketoconazole - used to treat fungal infections

If you are taking other hay fever treatments, double check with your doctor before taking Avamys - though in most cases it should be safe to take.

Always inform your prescriber of any other drugs you are taking (including over-the-counter and recreational drugs) so that they can ensure Avamys is suitable for you to use.
